Chinese president inaugurates former security chief John Lee amid western criticism of Beijing’s crackdown on democratic rights, independent media and personal freedoms

Xi Jinping has sworn in former security chief John Lee as Hong Kong’s new chief executive amid scathing assessments from the UK and US of China’s erosion of rights and freedoms on the 25th anniversary of the end of British rule.

China’s president welcomed the new leader, who oversaw the crackdown on Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, and his cabinet in a solemn ceremony on Friday morning.
